Environment and Ecology

Environmental Management:

JISCO actively promotes systematic green work. Through technological reform and innovation, we continue to improve energy efficiency, strictly control and reduce the emission of wastewater, waste gas and solid waste. This company is committed to building a green urban steel plant that is above the standard of the urban area and complies with the city’s green construction.

1. Environmental management system:

JISCO strictly has abided by the Environmental Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China and other laws and regulations, and has formulated environmental protection systems such as the Management Measures on Environmental Protection Process, Management Measures on Environmental Protection Performance Evaluation and Environmental Protection Accountability, and Management Measures on Environmental Protection Compliance, in ways to effectively fulfill environmental management responsibilities, prevent and reduce environmental risks, strengthen the accountability of environmental accidents, and raise awareness of environmental protection responsibilities.

2. Organizational framework for environmental management:

JISCO adopts three-level energy and environmental management framework. The first level
is the Energy and Environmental Protection Management Committee of JISCO, which is mainly responsible for the evaluation of major energy and environmental protection risks and decision making, as well as guiding the internal management and external communication of urban steel plants; the second level is the Energy and Environmental Protection Department, which
is in charge of planning and coordinating the company’s overall environmental planning and management; the third level is the energy and environmental protection system of each base, which adopts localized management for the construction, management and monitoring of the energy and environmental protection systems.

Climate Change

Climate change is one of the major factors affecting the production operations and reputation of the brand in recent years. JISCO has actively responded to climate change by incorporating climate change-related risks into the company’s ESG management system, and restructured and optimized capacity to realize “sustainable development of urban steel plants” based on such risks. The company issued the Management Procedures on Emergency Response Plan to prepare emergency responses for disasters that may be brought about by different extreme weather conditions and hired an external professional third party as the main supplier of maintenance and operation, so as to make sure that every base could resume working in extreme weather conditions.

The company always pays attention to the global trend of greenhouse gas emissions and actively implements carbon emission management plans at the national level as well as the carbon emission targets in the international Paris Agreement.

On the one hand, the company takes an active part in the pilot construction of China’s carbon market, which reflects in discussions with relevant departments at an early stage the formulation of policies and indicators about the inclusion of the steel industry in the carbon trading market, besides, it participates in carbon emissions trading in pilot areas; on the other hand, the company benchmarks itself against international rivals and grasps the engineering feasibility study of low-carbon metallurgy, while applying the high-grade silicon steel and high-strength automotive at the time of low-carbon development.

The company continues to promote the research on the whole lifecycle assessment (LCA) of steel products, propose comparative methods for environmental performance evaluation of major products and establishes evaluation models to keep featuring the products with green.

JISCO Group is committed to reaching CO2 emissions by 2023, technology capacity of 30% carbon reduction by 2025, 30% carbon reduction by 2035 and “carbon neutrality” by 2050. JISCO works to implement carbon targets in accordance with the Group’s objectives. The main idea of JISCO’s green and low-carbon development is to achieve green and low-carbon harmlessness in the steel production process with low-carbon metallurgy and smart manufacturing, and green and low-carbon in the use of steel products with high-quality products, so as to make contributions to build a carbon-neutral society.

On the basis of improving energy efficiency, the company actively participates in carbon market trading. With every base injecting in the local pilot carbon market, JISCO gradually establishes a robust carbon asset management system. In 2020, the company purchased carbon quotas and CCERs through market auctions, secondary market transactions and online invitations for matching prices, and successfully completed all agreements.

Apart from this, JISCO earnestly explores and actively applies the cutting-edge low-carbon technology in the steel industry and insists on applying the technology in the whole process.

Reducing Emissions

JISCO continuously strengthened its environmental protection management through various engineering, management and technical means to ensure full compliance and control of pollutant emissions and continuous improvement in the performance of major environmental protection indicators. During the reporting period, the company has no major environmental risk incidents.

JISCO adheres to the principle of “3R” (reduce, reuse and recycle), which requires reducing the production of waste in the production and maximize the local recycling of waste. Based on the action of “no solid waste leaving the factory”, the four main bases of JISCO have formulated the Solid Waste Management Measures and the 2020 Action Plan of “No Solid Waste Leaving the Factory” based on the Industrial Solid Waste Management Measures, Construction Waste Disposal Management Measures and Hazardous Waste Management Measures. The company incorporates solid waste management as a production process into the main production organization management, and comprehensively promotes solid waste reduction, resourceization and harmlessness in a project-based management mode, which highly integrated production organization and solid waste management, thus strongly promoting the work of reduction from source and return to production and utilization.

Water Resources Management

1. Risk management on the water environment

Stable water resources are an important guarantee for the steel industry in the main production of iron making, steel making and steel rolling. JISCO keeps its eyes on the availability and quality of new water in each base, evaluates its own management capacity of water resources, and explores the best use of water resources in an active manner, so as to ensure water safety and stability. JISCO builds its own reservoirs to ensure water is not only for its own production and living, but also used for the surrounding city.

JISCO regularly monitors and analyzes the water quality of the water sources around the bases, and then records the trend of changes in several indicators. The company has pioneered the technology that extracts clear water from the Yangtze River and fresh reservoir water, solving the technical problems of seawater backflow and waste discharge issue that affects water quality and reservoir ecological management. In addition, the company continues to reduce the risk of raw water quality, and scientifically assesses water source management. While reducing the impact of water resource risks on production, we can ensure water security in some regions.

2. Water Resources Consumption

JISCO combines zero-emission of wastewater with conservation in production, reducing the consumption of new water. The company focuses on water conservation and emission reduction at the source of each process and cascade use, in addition, it has made greater efforts to intercept industrial wastewater and domestic sewage and implement rainwater and sewage diversion and rainwater collection for reuse in the initial phase.

Bases along the Yangtze River has published documents on “Yangtze River Protection” action, managed the total water withdrawal indicator and reached two standards of total water consumption and intensity in accordance with national and local water withdrawal requirements. It is committed to applying water-saving technology and equipment to reduce water consumption and water withdrawal.

Biodiversity

JISCO pays continuous attention to the adaptation of the production environment to the natural ecology. While having a good performance on production and operation, the company constantly improves the traditional plant environment and increases the green plant coverage, on the basis of considering land suitability and diversity of plant species. In addition, the company assesses the impact of project construction on the ecological environment at the early stage of project construction and avoids embarking on project construction in ecologically fragile areas. In addition, the company works to maintain monitoring of the surrounding ecological environment during the project operation period and actively carries out the protection of biodiversity.
