Stainless Steel Grades for Refrigerated Containers
JISCO JUDE supplies stainless steel materials for refrigerated-container components, including SUS410L and JN4. Material selection should consider component location, required strength, forming and welding requirements, surface condition, corrosion environment and the applicable customer specification.
| Grade | Material Type | Typical Product / Finish | Typical Refrigerated Container Use | Selection Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SUS410L | Low-carbon ferritic stainless steel | Hot-rolled No.1 or cold-rolled / 2D-type products depending on specification | Frames, ladders, support structures and exterior-panel applications | Used where strength, fabrication capability and moderate corrosion resistance are required. |
| JN4 | JISCO-developed low-nickel stainless steel grade | Sheet / coil subject to production specification | Selected refrigerated-container inner-panel and other industrial applications | Use should be confirmed according to corrosion environment, forming requirements and customer specification. |
JN4 is presented as a JISCO material designation rather than a universal ASTM, EN or JIS grade. Final material requirements should be confirmed against the applicable JISCO specification, customer standard and material test certificate.

Technical Characteristics
SUS410L is a low-carbon ferritic stainless steel used in applications requiring a combination of formability, weldability, strength and moderate corrosion resistance. Its low carbon content helps support fabrication and welding requirements compared with higher-carbon 410-series grades.
For refrigerated-container applications, hot-rolled and cold-rolled products may be supplied according to the component design, surface condition and dimensional requirements. Straightness, thickness tolerance, surface roughness and other dimensional characteristics should be confirmed according to the required product specification and purchase order.
JN4 is a JISCO-developed low-nickel stainless steel containing copper and nitrogen according to the published JISCO product data. It is intended for applications where material cost, forming performance and corrosion requirements must be balanced. Suitability should be evaluated according to the actual service environment and customer specification.

Typical Applications
SUS410L can be used for selected refrigerated-container structural and exterior components. Depending on the product specification, hot-rolled material may be considered for frames, ladders and support structures, while cold-rolled material can be used for selected panel applications.
JN4 may be considered for selected refrigerated-container inner panels and other fabricated industrial products where its mechanical properties, forming performance and corrosion resistance satisfy the customer specification.
JN4 should not be treated as a universal replacement for 304 stainless steel. Any material substitution should be evaluated according to the corrosion environment, required mechanical properties, fabrication process, hygiene or food-contact requirements and the applicable project standard.
SUS410L is not the same as standard 410 stainless steel.
SUS410L is a low-carbon ferritic stainless steel, while conventional AISI/SUS 410 is generally classified as martensitic stainless steel and can be hardened through heat treatment. Buyers should confirm the exact grade designation and applicable standard before substitution.
SUS410L Standard Reference
SUS410L is a low-carbon ferritic stainless steel covered by Japanese stainless steel specifications including JIS G 4304 and JIS G 4305. The following values provide a general JIS material reference.

Values above are general SUS410L reference requirements. Exact requirements depend on the applicable JIS specification, product form, thickness and specification revision. Final acceptance should be based on the purchase specification and material test certificate (MTC).
| Grade | Chemical composition (%) | Processing performance | ||||||||
| C | Cr | P | S | Cu | N | Yield strength /MPa | Tensile strength /MPa | Elongation /% | HV | |
| SUS410L | ≤0.030 | 11.50-12.50 | ≤0.020 | ≤0.0015 | ≤0.30 | ≤0.035 | ≥195 | ≥360 | ≥22.0 | <200 |
| JN4 | ≤0.070 | 16.00-16.30 | ≤0.035 | ≤0.0020 | ≤2.00 | 0.080-0.15 | ≥250 | ≥600 | ≥45.0 | <230 |
The tighter SUS410L chemistry shown in this JISCO product table should not be interpreted as the general JIS composition limit for all SUS410L products. It represents the published product control values for the refrigerated-container material described on this page.
SUS410L vs JN4 for Refrigerated Container Applications
SUS410L and JN4 are used for different refrigerated-container requirements. Material selection should be based on component location, corrosion environment, forming and welding requirements, strength, surface condition and the applicable customer specification.
| Selection Factor | SUS410L | JN4 |
|---|---|---|
| Material Type | Low-carbon ferritic stainless steel | JISCO-developed low-nickel stainless steel grade |
| Typical Strength Level | Suitable for structural and fabricated components according to the required specification | Higher published tensile-strength level in the JISCO refrigerated-container product data |
| Forming | Suitable for selected formed and fabricated components | Can be considered where forming performance satisfies the customer specification |
| Welding | Low carbon content supports fabrication and welding requirements | Welding procedure should be confirmed according to the required component and customer specification |
| Typical Container Use | Frames, ladders, support structures and selected exterior components | Selected inner-panel and fabricated applications |
| 304 Replacement? | Not generally positioned as a direct 304 substitute | May be evaluated for selected applications, but should not be treated as a universal replacement for 304 |
| Standard Status | JIS standardized grade | JISCO material designation |
This comparison is intended for preliminary material selection. Final grade approval should be based on the customer’s technical specification, corrosion environment, fabrication requirements and material test certificate.
Material Selection by Refrigerated Container Component
| Container Component | Material Consideration | Possible Stainless Steel Option | Buyer Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structural Frame / Support | Strength, fabrication, welding and corrosion resistance | SUS410L | Confirm thickness, mechanical-property requirements and welding specification. |
| Ladder / Structural Access Component | Strength, forming and outdoor exposure | SUS410L | Surface condition and dimensional tolerance should be stated with the inquiry. |
| Exterior Panel | Formability, surface condition and corrosion exposure | SUS410L or customer-specified material | Confirm finish, thickness tolerance and environmental requirements. |
| Inner Panel | Formability, cleanability, corrosion environment and customer specification | JN4 or other approved stainless steel grade | Do not substitute for 304 without evaluating the actual service and hygiene requirements. |

How to Specify Stainless Steel for a Refrigerated Container Project
Confirm the Container Component
Material requirements differ between structural frames, ladders, exterior panels, inner panels and other fabricated components. The component location and function should therefore be identified before material selection.
Specify Product Form and Dimensions
Please state whether sheet, coil or plate is required, together with thickness, width, length or coil dimensions. Any special dimensional tolerance should be included in the purchase specification.
Define the Required Surface Condition
Surface requirements may differ between structural and visible panel applications. The required finish, roughness or appearance criteria should be stated rather than assumed from the grade designation alone.
Confirm Corrosion and Hygiene Requirements
For inner panels or components exposed to cleaning chemicals, moisture or food-related environments, corrosion and hygiene requirements should be reviewed before substituting one stainless steel grade for another.
Provide the Customer or Project Specification
For refrigerated-container materials, customer-specific technical requirements may be more restrictive than the general stainless steel standard. Drawings, technical specifications and required inspection documents should therefore be supplied with the inquiry whenever available.
