Stainless Steel for Rail Vehicles: 301L & T4003
Stainless Steel Grades for Rail Vehicle Applications
JISCO JUDE supplies stainless steel materials for selected rail-vehicle and transportation applications, including 301L austenitic stainless steel and T4003 ferritic stainless steel.
| Grade | Material Type | Standard / Reference | Main Characteristic | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 301L | Low-carbon austenitic stainless steel | UNS S30103 / SUS301L reference | Strong cold-work hardening response with good forming and welding capability | Urban rail vehicle bodies, structural panels and formed rail components |
| T4003 | Low-chromium ferritic structural stainless steel | JISCO T4003 product designation; related to the 1.4003 structural ferritic stainless steel family | Good weldability, strength, abrasion resistance and atmospheric corrosion resistance | Freight wagons, coal and ore cars, hoppers and mining transport equipment |
Cross-standard references are provided for material-selection guidance only. T4003 should be confirmed according to the applicable JISCO product specification and customer requirements rather than treated as an automatic one-to-one equivalent to another international grade.

301L is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel with a strong cold-work hardening response. By controlling the rolling condition, different strength levels can be produced for rail-vehicle structural components while retaining useful formability and weldability.
T4003 is a low-chromium ferritic structural stainless steel developed for applications requiring a combination of strength, weldability, abrasion resistance and improved atmospheric corrosion resistance compared with conventional carbon steel.
Material selection for rail vehicles should consider structural strength, forming and welding requirements, fatigue performance, corrosion environment, weight targets, surface condition and the applicable railway or customer specification.

301L stainless steel is widely used for selected urban rail and passenger-vehicle structural components where high strength after cold working, formability and weldability are important.
Typical applications can include rail-car body panels, structural shells, formed sections and other welded vehicle components, depending on the required strength condition and customer specification.
T4003 is used for selected railway freight and bulk-material transport applications such as coal gondola cars, ore wagons, hopper cars and related mining or conveyor equipment.
Compared with conventional carbon steel, low-chromium structural ferritic stainless steels can provide improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, which may support reduced corrosion allowance or maintenance requirements in suitable environments. Final thickness and corrosion allowance must still be determined by the vehicle design and service specification.

SUS301L Chemical Composition Reference

| SUS301L | ≤0.030 | ≤1.00 | ≤2.00 | ≤0.045 | ≤0.030 | 6.00–8.00 | 16.00–18.00 | ≤0.20 |
Composition values are provided as a common SUS301L rail-vehicle reference. Final acceptance should be based on the applicable JIS, customer or project specification and MTC.
SUS301L Strength Classes for Rail-Vehicle Applications
SUS301L can be supplied in different cold-worked strength conditions for different rail-car structural components. Strength increases with controlled cold working, while elongation generally decreases.
| Condition | Meaning | 0.2% Proof / Yield Strength, min. (MPa) | Tensile Strength, min. (MPa) | Elongation, min. (%) | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LT | Low Tensile | ≥215 | ≥550 | ≥45 | ≤207 HV |

| ST | Special Tensile | ≥410 | ≥760 | ≥35 | — |
| MT | Medium Tensile | ≥480 | ≥820 | ≥25 | — |
| HT | High Tensile | ≥680 | ≥930 | ≥20 | — |
Values above reproduce the published JISCO JUDE rail-vehicle product data. Rail manufacturers may specify additional upper limits, bend requirements, surface conditions or project-specific mechanical-property ranges. Final requirements should therefore be confirmed against the customer’s rail-vehicle material specification.
Why Does Rail-Vehicle 301L Have Different Strength Classes?
Different parts of a stainless-steel rail-car body require different combinations of strength and formability. Lower-strength conditions provide greater forming capability, while higher-strength conditions are used for structural members requiring greater load-carrying capacity.
Typical rail-car designs therefore use different SUS301L strength conditions for exterior panels, roof members, posts, side sills, cross beams and other structural components according to the vehicle design.
Published T4003 Rail-Application Product Data
T4003 is a low-chromium ferritic structural stainless steel used for selected railway freight and bulk-material transport applications. The following values reproduce published JISCO JUDE product data.
| Property | T4003 Published Value |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤0.030% |
| Chromium (Cr) | 11.00–13.00% |
| Nickel (Ni) | 0.60–1.00% |

The values above are published T4003 product data and should not be treated as universal EN, ASTM or JIS limits. Final chemistry, mechanical properties and delivery requirements should be confirmed against the applicable JISCO specification, customer rail specification and MTC.
How to Select a SUS301L Strength Class for Rail Vehicles
SUS301L rail-vehicle material can be supplied in different strength conditions produced through controlled cold working. The appropriate condition depends on the structural function, required strength, forming severity, welding requirements and vehicle design specification.
| Condition | Relative Strength Level | Formability | Typical Selection Logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| LT | Lower | Higher | Considered where forming capability is important and very high strength is not required. |
| DLT | Low to medium | Good | Used for selected formed rail-car body components requiring a balance of strength and ductility. |
| ST | Medium | Moderate | Considered for structural components requiring higher strength while retaining useful forming capability. |
| MT | Medium to high | Reduced compared with lower-strength conditions | Used for selected load-bearing structural members according to vehicle design requirements. |
| HT | High | Lower | Considered for components where high strength is prioritized and forming requirements permit. |
The table provides general material-selection guidance only. Rail-car manufacturers may define their own strength ranges, upper limits, bend requirements, surface conditions and component-specific acceptance criteria.
