Duplex Stainless Steel Grades at a Glance
Duplex stainless steels combine austenitic and ferritic microstructures, providing high strength together with strong resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking and localized corrosion.
Common grades include 2205, 2507, 2304 and 2101. Grade selection should be based on corrosion environment, strength requirements, fabrication conditions, applicable standards and project specifications.
2205 vs 2507 vs 2304 vs 2101 Duplex Stainless Steel
The following comparison provides a general guide to the positioning and common applications of major duplex stainless steel grades. Final material selection should be confirmed according to the actual corrosion environment, design requirements and applicable specifications.
| Grade | Type | Typical Positioning | Common Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2205 | Standard Duplex | Widely used duplex grade combining strength and corrosion resistance | Chemical processing, tanks, heat exchangers, FGD and industrial equipment |
| 2507 | Super Duplex | For more severe chloride and corrosive environments | Seawater, desalination, offshore and aggressive chemical service |
| 2304 | Lean Duplex | Lower-alloy duplex option for moderate environments | Structural fabrication, process equipment and moderately corrosive service |
| 2101 | Lean Duplex | Lean duplex grade with reduced nickel content | Storage tanks, structural fabrication and general industrial applications |
Duplex Stainless Steel Grade Equivalents
The following designations are commonly used for duplex stainless steel flat products. Always confirm the required standard and UNS/EN designation on the purchase order.
| Grade | UNS | EN | Common Flat-Product Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2205 | S32205 / S31803 | 1.4462 | ASTM A240/A240M |
| 2507 | S32750 | 1.4410 | ASTM A240/A240M |
| 2304 | S32304 | 1.4362 | ASTM A240/A240M |
| 2101 | S32101 | 1.4162 | ASTM A240/A240M |

Duplex stainless steels combine high mechanical strength with good resistance to localized corrosion and chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
Performance varies by grade. 2205 is a widely used general-purpose duplex grade, while 2507 provides higher corrosion resistance for more severe chloride environments. Lean duplex grades such as 2304 and 2101 use lower alloy content for applications where extreme corrosion resistance is not required.
Final grade selection should consider corrosion environment, design temperature, fabrication requirements, welding procedure and applicable project standards.

It is widely used in petrochemical industry, bridge making and desalination, power plant flue gas desulfurization (FGD), paper making, construction, nuclear power and other industries and fields.
