As food processing technology and standards continue to improve, so do the requirements for materials. Stainless steel has become one of the common materials used in the food processing industry because of its good performance.

Food processing

Characteristics of stainless steel

Stainless steel with high chromium content is corrosion- and high-temperature-resistant, suitable for use in harsh environments. Stainless steel comes in different grades and models, commonly 304, 316, etc. Among them, 304 stainless steel is more widely used in food processing. 316 stainless steel suits high temperatures, high pressure, and other harsh conditions.

Applications

  • Food storage and transportation

Stainless steel storage tanks, troughs, and containers allow for long-term storage of food products while avoiding the possible adverse effects of other materials. Using stainless steel tankers and tank boats during food transportation also ensures food safety and hygiene.

  • Food processing equipment

Stainless steel is widely used in food processing equipment, such as food-cutting machines, mixers, egg beaters, baking ovens, etc. The materials used to make these devices must meet sanitary standards and are also required to be able to withstand harsh conditions such as high temperatures and pressures.

  • Food packaging

Stainless steel can also make food packaging containers, such as cans, beverage bottles, thermal cups, etc. These containers not only ensure the hygiene and safety of the food but also maintain the freshness and taste of the food.

Applicable stainless steel types

  • 304 stainless steel

304 stainless steel is widely used in food processing because of its excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance. It is mainly composed of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It has good toughness and ductility. 304 stainless steel is suitable for making equipment and containers that do not require high temperature and pressure, such as making kitchenware, tableware, food storage tanks, etc.

  • 316 stainless steel

316 stainless steel contains 2%-3% molybdenum, with higher corrosion and temperature resistance. Its main components are 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2% molybdenum, and it is resistant to many corrosive gases and liquids.316 stainless steel is suitable for equipment and containers that resist corrosion and oxidation, such as making yogurt fermenters, dairy processing equipment, etc.

  • 430 stainless steel

430 stainless steel is a ferritic stainless steel that contains more than 17% chromium. Its corrosion and high-temperature resistance are less than 304 and 316 stainless steel. Still, the price is relatively low and suitable for less severe food processing environments, such as making some cookware, etc.

  • 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel

2205 duplex stainless steel has a ferritic and austenitic organization, resulting in excellent corrosion resistance, tensile strength, and impact resistance. It is suitable for food processing equipment working in acid and alkaline environments, such as making seafood, chilled product preservation equipment, etc.

  • 904L stainless steel

904L stainless steel is a high alloy material with excellent corrosion and wear resistance. It is suitable for food processing equipment used in harsh environmental conditions, such as high-concentration acidic environments, high temperatures, high-pressure environments, etc. 904L stainless steel is widely used in producing seafood processing equipment, chemical equipment, etc.

Cautions

  1. Different types of stainless steel have different characteristics and should not be mixed. Selection is based on specific processes and environmental conditions to ensure quality and sanitary standards of equipment and containers.
  2. Methods of use and maintenance. Food processing equipment and containers must be cleaned and disinfected frequently to ensure the safety and hygiene of food.
  3.  Prevent contact with other metallic materials or chemicals to avoid corrosion or contamination.

Summary

Stainless steel is one of the most commonly used materials in the food processing industry, and different types of stainless steel are suitable for other processes and environmental conditions. Choosing the right stainless steel material and using and maintaining it properly can help improve the quality and hygiene standards of food processing equipment and containers and safeguard the safety and quality of food.
