How to Review an SGS Stainless Steel Report
An SGS report should be reviewed as a test record for the specific submitted sample rather than as a universal certificate for an entire stainless steel grade.
| Item to Check | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Sample Description | Confirms which stainless steel grade or material was submitted for testing. |
| Report Number & Date | Identifies the individual test report and when the testing was performed. |
| Applicant | Shows which company submitted the sample for testing. |
| Test Requested | Defines what SGS was actually asked to test. |
| Test Method | Explains the analytical or laboratory method used. |
| Test Result | Shows the measured or reported result for the submitted sample. |
| Acceptance Criteria | Indicates the regulation, specification or customer requirement used to evaluate the result. |
A report for one historical sample should not automatically be used as evidence for a different heat, batch or current production order.
Third-Party Inspection for New Stainless Steel Orders
Buyers may request SGS or another independent inspection organization for a new order when third-party verification is required by a project specification, purchase contract or internal quality-control procedure.
The inspection scope can be agreed before order confirmation and may include document review, quantity checks, dimensional inspection, visual inspection, material identification, sampling, laboratory testing or witnessing of selected tests.
Please specify the required inspection organization, test items, applicable standard or regulation, acceptance criteria and reporting requirements when sending the RFQ.
Need SGS or Third-Party Inspection for Your Order?
Send your stainless steel grade, standard, dimensions, quantity, required test items and inspection requirements. JISCO JUDE can review the applicable material, documentation and third-party inspection options.
SGS Inspection FAQ
Does an SGS report mean every product of that grade is SGS certified?
No. An SGS test report normally relates to the specific submitted sample and the test scope stated in that report. It should not automatically be applied to every current heat, batch or order.
Can SGS inspection be requested for a new order?
Third-party inspection requirements can be reviewed before order confirmation. Buyers should specify the inspection organization, test scope, acceptance criteria and required report format.
What information should I check in an SGS report?
Review the sample description, report number, report date, applicant, test requested, test method, results and applicable acceptance criteria.
Can SGS testing replace the material test certificate?
Not necessarily. An SGS report and an MTC serve different purposes. Buyers should specify both material-documentation and independent-testing requirements when both are required.
Can I request PMI or chemical analysis?
PMI, chemical analysis and other testing requirements can be reviewed according to the material, project specification and agreed inspection scope.
