Common Stainless Steel Tube & Pipe Standards

The applicable standard depends on whether the product is intended for process piping, general tubing, boiler or heat-exchanger service, pressure applications or structural use. Manufacturing route alone does not determine the applicable standard.

StandardProduct / ApplicationManufacturing Route
ASTM A312/A312MAustenitic stainless steel pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive serviceSeamless, welded and heavily cold-worked welded
ASTM A213/A213MBoiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubingSeamless

Standard revisions change over time. Buyers should specify the required standard and revision in the purchase order rather than relying only on the standard number shown on a supplier webpage.

Which ASTM Stainless Steel Tube or Pipe Standard Should You Specify?

ASTM A312/A312M – Process Pipe

ASTM A312/A312M is commonly specified for austenitic stainless steel pipe used in high-temperature and general corrosive service. It can cover seamless, welded and heavily cold-worked welded pipe according to the specification.

ASTM A269/A269M – General Stainless Steel Tubing

ASTM A269/A269M is commonly used for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing intended for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service.

ASTM A213/A213M – Seamless Boiler and Heat Exchanger Tube

ASTM A213/A213M is commonly specified for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes.

ASTM A249/A249M – Welded Boiler and Heat Exchanger Tube

ASTM A249/A249M is commonly used for welded austenitic stainless steel boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger and condenser tubes.

Do Not Select a Standard by Grade Alone

The same stainless steel grade may be supplied under different standards depending on whether the product is intended for piping, general tubing, heat exchangers, boilers or another engineered system. Buyers should therefore specify both the material grade and the required product standard.

Stainless Steel Pipe vs Tube: What Is the Difference?

Although the terms pipe and tube are sometimes used interchangeably, they are normally specified differently in industrial procurement.

ItemStainless Steel PipeStainless Steel Tube
Primary Selection BasisNominal pipe size, schedule, pressure and piping specificationOutside diameter, wall thickness, dimensional tolerance and application
Typical ApplicationsProcess piping, chemical systems, water systems and pressure serviceHeat exchangers, boilers, instrumentation, mechanical and fabricated equipment
Common ASTM ExamplesASTM A312/A312MASTM A213/A213M, A249/A249M and A269/A269M
Ordering InformationNPS, schedule or wall thickness, length, grade and standardOutside diameter, wall thickness, length, grade, tolerance and standard

The correct designation depends on the applicable specification. Buyers should provide the required standard together with dimensions rather than relying only on the words “pipe” or “tube”.

Seamless vs Welded Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube

Both seamless and welded stainless steel products are widely used in industrial systems. The appropriate manufacturing route depends on the applicable standard, dimensions, pressure requirements, corrosion environment, inspection requirements and project specification.

FactorSeamlessWelded
Manufacturing RouteProduced without a longitudinal weld seamProduced from stainless steel strip or plate and joined by a longitudinal welding process
Typical Size ConsiderationCommon for smaller and medium outside diameters and selected heavy-wall requirementsOffers broad dimensional flexibility, including many larger-diameter applications
Typical ApplicationsProcess piping, pressure service, heat exchangers and demanding industrial systemsProcess piping, heat exchangers, water systems, food equipment and fabricated systems
InspectionAccording to the specified material and application standardWeld quality and any required NDT should be confirmed according to the applicable specification
Cost ConsiderationMay involve higher manufacturing cost depending on grade and dimensionsCan be economical for many standard and larger-size applications

Seamless should not automatically be described as “better” than welded pipe or tube. Both manufacturing routes can meet demanding service requirements when produced, inspected and certified according to the correct standard.

How to Choose a Stainless Steel Grade for Tube & Pipe

GradeMain Selection ReasonTypical Tube / Pipe ApplicationsBuyer Note
304 / 304LGeneral corrosion resistance, fabrication and broad availabilityFood equipment, water systems, general process piping and fabricated tubing304L is commonly selected for welded systems where lower carbon content is preferred.
316 / 316LHigher resistance in many chemical and chloride-containing environments due to molybdenum additionChemical processing, pharmaceutical equipment, marine-related systems and heat exchangersService conditions such as chloride concentration and temperature should be reviewed before selection.
321Titanium-stabilized grade for selected elevated-temperature and welded applicationsHigh-temperature piping, exhaust and process equipmentConfirm operating temperature and applicable engineering specification.
Duplex 2205Higher strength combined with good chloride stress-corrosion resistanceChemical processing, desalination, offshore and demanding process systemsApplicable tube or pipe standard, welding procedure and corrosion requirements should be confirmed.

Grade selection should be based on the actual process fluid, temperature, pressure, chloride content, fabrication requirements and applicable engineering code.

Stainless Steel Tube & Pipe FAQ

What is the difference between stainless steel pipe and tube?

Pipe is commonly specified by nominal pipe size, schedule and piping requirements, while tube is more often specified by outside diameter, wall thickness and dimensional tolerances. The applicable product standard should always be confirmed with the order.

Is seamless stainless steel pipe better than welded pipe?

Not necessarily. Seamless and welded stainless steel products are both used in demanding industrial applications. The appropriate manufacturing route depends on the applicable standard, dimensions, pressure requirements, corrosion environment, inspection requirements and project specification.

What is the difference between ASTM A312 and ASTM A269?

ASTM A312/A312M is commonly used for stainless steel process pipe, while ASTM A269/A269M is commonly used for general stainless steel tubing. Buyers should select the standard according to the intended product and service rather than the stainless steel grade alone.

Which standard is used for stainless steel heat exchanger tubes?

ASTM A213/A213M is commonly specified for seamless boiler and heat-exchanger tubing, while ASTM A249/A249M is commonly specified for welded boiler, heat-exchanger and condenser tubing. Project-specific requirements may also apply.

Should I choose 304L or 316L stainless steel tube?

304L is widely used for general fabrication, food equipment, water systems and process applications. 316L contains molybdenum and is generally selected for greater resistance in many chemical and chloride-containing environments. Actual service conditions should be reviewed before grade selection.

Can you supply duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe or tube?

Duplex stainless steel products may be available according to the required product form, dimensions and applicable standard. Buyers should provide the grade, standard, dimensions, quantity and project requirements for availability review.

What information is required for a stainless steel pipe quotation?

Please provide the grade, applicable standard, seamless or welded requirement, OD or NPS, wall thickness or schedule, length, quantity, testing requirements, certification requirements and delivery destination.
