Machining Considerations by Stainless Steel Grade
Machining behavior varies significantly between stainless steel grades. Cutting parameters, tooling, coolant, machining allowance and workholding should therefore be reviewed according to the material grade and component geometry.
| Material Family | Common Grades | Machining Consideration | Typical Components |
|---|---|---|---|
| Austenitic Stainless Steel | 304, 304L, 316L | These grades can work-harden during machining. Stable cutting conditions, suitable tooling and adequate cooling are important. | Flanges, plates, housings, shafts and process-equipment components |
| Ferritic Stainless Steel | 409L, 430, 439, 441 | Machining behavior depends on grade, condition and component design. Tooling and cutting parameters should be selected according to the required operation. | Automotive, fabricated and general industrial components |
| Martensitic Stainless Steel | 410, 420 Family | Machinability is strongly affected by hardness and heat-treatment condition. The delivery condition should be confirmed before machining. | Valve parts, shafts, tools and wear-resistant components |
| Duplex Stainless Steel | 2205, 2507 | Higher strength and work-hardening behavior generally require rigid machining setups, appropriate tooling and controlled cutting parameters. | Chemical, offshore, pressure and high-strength components |
| Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steel | 17-4PH and related grades | Machining behavior depends strongly on heat-treatment condition and required final properties. | Shafts, valve parts and high-strength precision components |
Machining recommendations depend on grade, hardness, product condition, dimensions and required tolerance. Final machining parameters should be determined according to the actual workpiece and drawing.

Custom Machining from Your Drawing
For custom stainless steel components, drawings provide the most reliable basis for machining review and quotation. JISCO JUDE can review component geometry, raw-material requirements, machining allowance, critical tolerances and required inspection before confirming production feasibility.
Please send the latest drawing revision together with the material grade, quantity and delivery destination. If the drawing contains critical dimensions, geometric tolerances or surface-roughness requirements, these should be clearly identified.
Need Stainless Steel Machining from a Drawing?
Send your drawing, material grade, workpiece dimensions, quantity, tolerances, required machining operations and delivery destination. JISCO JUDE can review machining feasibility and quotation options for your project.
Stainless Steel Machining FAQ
What stainless steel grades can be machined?
Machining feasibility can be reviewed for austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex and other stainless steel grades depending on material condition, dimensions, component geometry and required machining operations.
Can you machine 304 and 316L stainless steel?
304, 304L and 316L are widely machined stainless steel grades. Because austenitic stainless steels can work-harden during machining, tooling, cutting conditions, workholding and cooling should be selected according to the component and machining process.
Can duplex 2205 stainless steel be machined?
Duplex 2205 can be machined, but its relatively high strength and work-hardening behavior require suitable tooling, rigid machining conditions and appropriate cutting parameters. Feasibility should be reviewed according to the drawing and workpiece condition.
What drawing formats can I send?
PDF, DWG, STEP and other commonly used technical drawing formats can be reviewed where available. The latest drawing revision should be supplied for quotation and production review.
Can you guarantee a specific machining tolerance?
Machining tolerance depends on component size, geometry, material, machining operation, equipment setup and inspection method. Required tolerances should be identified on the drawing and confirmed during quotation review rather than assumed from a general webpage.
Can large stainless steel components be machined?
Large-component machining can be reviewed according to published equipment capacity, but actual feasibility depends on workpiece dimensions, weight, geometry, fixture arrangement, material and required machining operations.
What information is required for a machining quotation?
Please provide the drawing, material grade, raw-material form, overall dimensions, quantity, machining operations, dimensional and geometric tolerances, surface requirements, inspection requirements and delivery destination.
