Since the start of 2026, the domestic stainless steel industry has received multiple positive development signals, showing the core characteristics of “capacity optimization, price stabilization and high-end upgrading”. Driven by the fluctuations of nickel-chromium raw material prices, the booming demand from downstream new energy, photovoltaic and high-end manufacturing sectors, and the implementation of the industry’s green and low-carbon policies, the stainless steel market has bid farewell to homogeneous competition and accelerated its transformation towards high-end, refined and intelligent development. This article summarizes the 2026 latest core trends of the stainless steel industry, and interprets the new development direction of the industry from four dimensions: market price, capacity layout, raw material market and high-end applications.

1. Stainless Steel Prices Rebounded Steadily in January 2026, Main Varieties Rose Slightly

After the New Year’s Day in 2026, the domestic stainless steel market ended the volatile market at the end of 2025 and ushered in a steady rebound. According to the latest data from Mysteel, as of January 29, 2026, the average price of domestic 304 stainless steel cold-rolled coil (2.0mm/Zhangpu) was quoted at 18,200 CNY/ton, an increase of 2.3% from the beginning of the month; the average price of 316L stainless steel cold-rolled coil was 29,800 CNY/ton, with a growth rate of 1.8%; the average price of ordinary 201 stainless steel cold-rolled coil was 9,500 CNY/ton, up 1.2%, showing a pattern of “high-end varieties leading the rise, ordinary varieties rising steadily” as a whole.

There are two core driving factors for the price increase: first, the slight rebound of nickel ore raw material prices, and the fine-tuning of Indonesia’s nickel pig iron export policy led to a short-term contraction of domestic nickel pig iron arrivals, forming support on the cost side; second, the release of pre-Spring Festival stocking demand of downstream processing enterprises, especially the increased stocking willingness of people’s livelihood fields such as home appliances and kitchen utensils, driving the recovery of spot market transactions. Industry insiders analyzed that the stainless steel market will maintain a “steady with a slight rise” trend before the Spring Festival, and the post-holiday trend needs to pay attention to the resumption rhythm of downstream enterprises and the import of raw materials.

2. Stainless Steel Industry Capacity Structure Optimized in 2026, High-End Capacity Continues to Be Put into Operation

In 2026, the domestic stainless steel industry continued the capacity adjustment direction of “eliminating backward capacity and increasing high-end capacity”. According to the latest statistics from the China Stainless Steel Industry Association, the national crude stainless steel capacity was about 41 million tons in 2025, a year-on-year decrease of 2.1%, with about 800,000 tons of backward 200 series hot-rolled capacity eliminated; at the same time, the high-end 300 series, 400 series and special stainless steel capacity increased by about 1.2 million tons, mainly concentrated in stainless steel industrial clusters such as Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong.

Since the start of 2026, a number of high-end stainless steel capacity projects have been put into operation: Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group added 200,000 tons/year of ultra-pure stainless steel capacity for photovoltaic use, whose products are mainly supplied to photovoltaic brackets and photovoltaic frame fields; Tsingshan Holding’s Zhanjiang base put into operation 150,000 tons/year of stainless steel strip capacity for new energy vehicles, adapting to the lightweight and corrosion-resistant needs of new energy vehicle bodies; the expansion project of Baoshan Iron and Steel’s high-end special stainless steel capacity entered the trial production stage, whose products can be applied to high-end fields such as aerospace and marine engineering.

The China Stainless Steel Industry Association stated that the industry will strictly control the expansion of low-end capacity and encourage enterprises to transform to high-end special stainless steel and customized stainless steel products. It is expected that the proportion of national high-end stainless steel capacity will rise to more than 35% in 2026, an increase of 4 percentage points compared with 2025.

3. Stainless Steel Raw Material Prices Fluctuate Controllably, Scrap Recycling Becomes a New Industry Trend

As the core raw materials for stainless steel production, the price trends of nickel and chromium directly affect the industry cost. In January 2026, the average price of domestic electrolytic nickel was quoted at 148,000 CNY/ton, a slight increase of 1.5% from the beginning of the month. The fine-tuning of Indonesia’s nickel pig iron export policy was the main inducement, but the overall supply was sufficient and the price fluctuation was within a controllable range; the average price of high-carbon ferrochrome was 8,200 CNY/50 base tons, basically the same as the beginning of the month, with sufficient release of domestic ferrochrome capacity and a relatively stable supply and demand pattern.

Notably, with the in-depth implementation of the dual carbon policy, stainless steel scrap recycling and utilization has become an important direction for the industry to reduce costs and carbon emissions. In January 2026, the National Development and Reform Commission and other departments issued the “Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Development of the Recycled Stainless Steel Industry”, proposing that the national stainless steel scrap recycling utilization rate should be raised to more than 40% by 2028. At present, domestic leading stainless steel enterprises have accelerated the layout of recycled stainless steel capacity: Yongxing Materials expanded its recycled stainless steel capacity to 500,000 tons/year, GEM Co., Ltd. built a scrap recycling system in cooperation with many stainless steel enterprises, and the production process of recycled stainless steel has become increasingly mature.

Industry experts said that recycled stainless steel production can reduce carbon emissions by about 70%, and the raw material cost is 10%-15% lower than that of primary stainless steel. It will become an important track for the development of the stainless steel industry in the future. It is expected that the domestic output of recycled stainless steel will exceed 8 million tons in 2026, a year-on-year increase of more than 12%.

4. High-End Application Fields Continue to Expand, New Energy & Photovoltaics Become the Core Growth Engines

In 2026, the downstream demand structure of the stainless steel industry has changed significantly. The demand in traditional fields such as home appliances, kitchen utensils and construction remains stable, while high-end fields such as new energy vehicles, photovoltaics, energy storage and marine engineering have become the core growth engines of demand. According to estimates, the proportion of domestic stainless steel demand in the new energy field has risen to 28% in 2025, an increase of 6 percentage points compared with 2024, and this proportion is expected to exceed 30% in 2026.

In the new energy vehicle field, stainless steel has become the core raw material for body structures, battery casings and charging piles by virtue of its corrosion resistance, lightweight and high strength advantages. The stainless steel consumption of a single new energy vehicle is about 50% higher than that of traditional fuel vehicles; in the photovoltaic field, ultra-pure stainless steel is widely used in photovoltaic frames, brackets and inverter casings due to its UV resistance and corrosion resistance, and the stainless steel demand in the photovoltaic field increased by more than 35% year-on-year in 2025; in the energy storage field, the tanks and pipelines of large energy storage power stations all adopt high-end stainless steel, and the relevant demand continues to climb with the rapid development of the energy storage industry.
