Industry News & Stainless Steel Supply Chain Analysis |
GEA announced its compact aseptic 15 and pure 15
pharmaceutical separators on September 17, 2026.
The
official release
targets smaller batches in development, pilot work and production.
GEA lists throughput ranges of
250–500 liters per hour for the clarifier version
and
350–600 liters per hour for the nozzle bowl version.
These published ranges require application-specific confirmation;
they are not guaranteed results for every feed.
What the Product Launch Adds
The machines accommodate different bowl configurations on a common
skid. GEA describes the aseptic 15 as designed for
sterilization-in-place, or SIP. Additional material and surface
documentation depends on the configuration and customer requirements.
JISCO JUDE’s supply-chain assessment:
for fabricators building comparable pharmaceutical process
equipment, the relevant purchasing issue is how a compact equipment
design translates into approved material, surface and documentation
requirements. Smaller batches still need clearly specified metal
and a controlled fabrication route.
Where Stainless Steel Enters the Equipment Supply Chain
A separator installation can involve surrounding process vessels,
transfer tubing, stationary machined components and structural covers.
The following examples describe material packages for pharmaceutical
equipment projects generally; they are not a bill of materials for
GEA’s new models.
| Component package | Material purchase | What the drawing or order should establish |
|---|---|---|
| Fabricated vessel shells and covers | Sheet or plate, commonly to ASTM A240/A240M when specified | Approved grade, thickness tolerance, forming allowance and responsibility for the finished contact surface |
| Hygienic transfer lines | Sanitary tubing, potentially to ASTM A270/A270M with the ordered requirements | Tube size, wall thickness, internal finish, end condition and required inspection documents |
| Stationary adapters and machined bodies | Bar or forging stock under the approved component specification | Manufacturing route, machining allowance, inspection scope and traceability after machining |
| Guards, covers and support components | Sheet, formed sections or other specified stock | Cleaning exposure, surface condition, dimensions and whether the part contacts the process fluid |
High-speed rotating bowls require the equipment manufacturer’s
approved design and material requirements. A general-purpose
stainless steel grade description is not sufficient to authorize
a replacement rotating component.
Why a 316L Inquiry Needs More Than the Alloy Name
Outokumpu’s Supra range information
identifies pharmaceutical equipment among the applications for
316L/4404. It associates this product with
UNS S31603 and EN 1.4404.
These references provide material context; they do not establish
which grades GEA uses in the newly announced separators.
For an actual purchase, specify the product standard and edition
as well as the grade. If both ASTM and EN compliance are required,
confirm both against the supplied product’s certification.
Do not assume that a familiar grade cross-reference proves
compliance with every requirement in two different product standards.
ASME’s BPE overview
covers materials, surface requirements, design, fabrication,
inspection and related subjects. When a project invokes ASME BPE,
identify the applicable edition and component requirements rather
than treating “BPE” as another name for 316L.
Define which surfaces require finishing, the acceptance criteria
and the stage at which inspection occurs. Mill-finished stock,
a welded assembly and a completed polished component represent
different acceptance stages. The order should also identify who
performs any specified electropolishing, passivation and final
cleaning.
Purchasing Implication: Agree the First Batch Before Releasing
Repeat Orders
For fabricators developing a new process skid, a practical approach
is to quote the initial fabrication batch separately from repeat
production. Before committing to a larger material lot, agree how
the first components will demonstrate dimensional, surface and
documentation acceptance.
This can prevent a material order from arriving before the required
finish, cutting allowance or certificate package has been settled.
Ask each bidder to state whether the quotation covers raw stock,
cut blanks, further processing or finished components.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ASTM A270 tubing automatically pharmaceutical quality?
No. The
ASTM A270/A270M scope
states that pharmaceutical quality may be requested as a
supplementary requirement. Specify the applicable supplementary
requirements and other project requirements in the order.
Can EN 1.4435 replace EN 1.4404 without approval?
No. These are distinct grades with different composition requirements,
even though both appear within 316L product families. A substitution
needs the purchaser’s approval and confirmation against the
component specification.
Does a mill certificate establish ASME BPE certification?
No.
ASME explains that its BPE Certification Mark
identifies components manufactured and certified by an ASME BPE
Certificate Holder. A raw-material certificate alone does not
establish that status.
Does this launch indicate a shortage of 316L stainless steel?
No such conclusion follows from the announcement. A product launch
is not evidence of market-wide material shortages. Purchasing
decisions need current supplier quotations, confirmed availability
and the project’s approved delivery schedule.
