Source announcement:

Alfa Laval has been selected by Saipem to supply heat-transfer
equipment for Stockholm Exergi’s bioenergy with carbon capture
and storage (BECCS) project in Sweden.

The package includes a Ziepack gas-gas interchanger and multiple
process plate-and-frame heat exchangers, according to
Alfa Laval’s September 14 announcement.

The award puts a specific equipment package behind a large carbon
capture development. For stainless steel producers, service centers
and equipment fabricators, it provides a concrete example of how
energy projects connect to downstream manufacturing and material
procurement.

Heat Recovery Is Central to the Stockholm Project

Saipem is the project’s engineering, procurement and construction
contractor. Alfa Laval’s release gives an expected start of operations
in 2028 and a planned capture and permanent storage
capacity of up to 800,000 metric tonnes of biogenic
CO2 per year
. These are forward-looking project
figures, not measured operating results.

The equipment will support heat recovery for Stockholm’s district
heating system, connecting the new capture facility with existing
energy infrastructure.

The announcement does not disclose the equipment contract value,
stainless steel tonnage or component-level alloy specifications.

The Process Route Matters for the Equipment Supply Chain

Stockholm Exergi’s
official explanation of the BECCS process
identifies hot potassium carbonate as its chosen
capture technology. The absorption liquid consists mainly of water
and potassium carbonate.

After capture, the planned process includes CO2
purification, liquefaction, temporary buffer storage and shipment
to permanent geological storage. The owner also describes recovering
heat from capture and liquefaction for the district heating network.

For equipment purchasing teams, this sequence creates several distinct
service conditions. A heat exchanger handling an absorption solution,
a cooling-water circuit and a component handling liquefied
CO2 require separate engineering assessments. The project
name alone cannot determine a suitable stainless steel grade.

Where Stainless Steel Fits in Carbon Capture Equipment

In its
carbon capture materials overview,
stainless steel producer Outokumpu identifies process heat exchangers,
piping, storage tanks, pressure vessels and ductwork as relevant
applications. It also highlights 316L, duplex 2205 and super duplex
2507 among grades considered for carbon capture, utilization and
storage duties.

These are industry application examples. They are not a published
material list for the Stockholm equipment package. Alloy selection
still depends on the process chemistry, impurities, temperature,
pressure, fabrication route and applicable equipment requirements.

For flat-product suppliers, the relevant inquiries can involve sheet
or coil for formed components and plate for fabricated vessels or
other specified parts. Thin heat-transfer plates, pressure-containing
components and external covers should be quoted against their own
drawings and acceptance criteria.

Supply Chain Analysis: What Buyers Should Watch Next

JISCO JUDE’s assessment:
the procurement significance of the announcement lies in the move
from a broad project plan to named equipment supply. For fabricators
pursuing similar work, the useful next signals are approved drawings,
released material specifications and scheduled manufacturing batches.

Those documents determine whether a steel inquiry is ready for a firm
quotation. A project capacity figure cannot establish the required
metal weight, plate thickness or delivery schedule, and a single
equipment award is insufficient evidence of a wider stainless steel
shortage.

Three purchasing decisions deserve early attention:

  • Separate requirements by component.
Identify the product form, approved alloy, governing material
standard and delivery condition for each line item. Specify the
standard edition and any project-specific additions.
  • Connect material dimensions to fabrication.
Coil width, sheet size, thickness tolerance and edge condition
should match the planned forming and joining operations. Evaluate
trial material separately when the manufacturing route is still
    being qualified.
  • Keep traceability through processing.
Agree how heat or coil identification and inspection records will
follow material after slitting, cutting and delivery to the
    fabricator.

For these inquiries, JISCO JUDE’s
cold
rolled stainless steel sheet and coil
page and
cutting, slitting
and cut-to-length services
provide starting points for a
specification review. Availability and processing feasibility must
be confirmed against the actual order requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this equipment announcement represent an open tender for
stainless steel?

No. It reports the selection of an equipment supplier. Any raw-material
purchasing opportunity would depend on separate sourcing decisions
and supplier qualification by the relevant manufacturer or contractor.

Can a fabricator request a budget quotation before the alloy is approved?

Yes. Identify the quotation as budgetary and state the provisional
grade, dimensions and quantity. A firm purchase order should follow
approval of the material specification, with any proposed
substitutions or deviations resolved in writing.

Does a raw-material test certificate approve a finished heat exchanger?

No. A material certificate documents specified information about the
supplied metal. Finished equipment has separate design, fabrication,
inspection and testing requirements, determined by the contract and
applicable equipment rules.
