Where Is 304L Stainless Steel Used in Petrochemical Tank Farms and Utility Systems?
304L stainless steel is widely used in welded equipment throughout chemical and petrochemical facilities, but the term “refinery service” is too broad to select the material safely.
A chemical-additive tank, a low-chloride utility-water line and a refinery overhead condenser may all be located inside the same refinery, yet their corrosion environments can be completely different.
Type 304L / UNS S30403 is most valuable where good fabrication and weldability are required and the process environment remains within the corrosion capability of a standard chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel.
This makes 304L particularly relevant to selected tank-farm equipment, additive and blending vessels, utility systems, pipe spools and fabricated transfer equipment.
This guide connects:
petrochemical equipment → service environment → 304L product form → ASTM standard → fabrication → RFQ.
Quick Answer: Which Petrochemical Equipment Is a Good Candidate for 304L?
When the process medium, chloride level, temperature and contaminants are compatible with the alloy, 304L may be considered for:
- selected chemical storage tanks
- additive and dosing tanks
- blending tanks
- day tanks
- selected utility-water tanks
- low-chloride condensate systems
- chemical-transfer lines
- pipe spools
- fabricated process skids
- selected heat-exchanger shells and components
- flanges
- wrought piping fittings
- valve components
- selected tank-farm fabricated equipment
304L should not automatically be specified for refinery overhead systems, warm chloride solutions, seawater, severe acid service, sour H2S environments, high-temperature sulfidation or other aggressive process conditions.
Why Does Low Carbon Matter in Welded Petrochemical Equipment?
Type 304L is the low-carbon version of the 304 chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel family.
The lower carbon content reduces the risk of chromium-carbide precipitation caused by thermal exposure during welding.
This can reduce susceptibility to intergranular corrosion in welded equipment and is one reason the grade is widely considered for:
- large welded tanks
- fabricated vessels
- pipe spools
- welded process piping
- equipment containing multiple attachment welds
- fabricated systems that cannot conveniently be solution annealed after welding
Low carbon does not make 304L resistant to every refinery fluid.
It also does not significantly improve resistance to chloride pitting compared with the basic 304 alloy family.
For general material information, see the
JUDE Steel 304L stainless steel grade page.

A tank shell may require ASTM A240 plate, while a finished refinery pipe spool may contain ASTM A312 TP304L pipe, ASTM A403 WP304L fittings and ASTM A182 F304L flanges.
ASTM A240 currently covers chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for pressure vessels and general applications.
For the current scope, see
ASTM A240/A240M.
ASTM A240 Type 304L / UNS S30403 Chemical Composition
The following values are specification limits for ASTM A240 Type 304L flat products. They should not be described as a producer’s typical heat chemistry.
| Element | ASTM A240 S30403, wt.% |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.030 max. |
| Manganese (Mn) | 2.00 max. |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.75 max. |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.045 max. |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.030 max. |
| Chromium (Cr) | 18.0–20.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 8.0–12.0 |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.10 max. |
Typical producer chemistry may be close to approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, but acceptance of delivered material should be based on the applicable specification and mill test certificate.
Which Petrochemical Equipment Uses 304L?
1. Compatible Chemical Storage Tanks
Storage tanks are one of the most practical uses for 304L when the stored chemical is compatible with the alloy.
Potential fabricated components include:
- tank shells
- tank bottoms
- roofs
- formed heads
- access covers
- internal partitions
- nozzle reinforcement components
- welded attachments
The phrase “chemical storage” is not sufficient for material selection.
The buyer should identify:
- chemical identity
- concentration
- water content
- chloride contamination
- normal operating temperature
- maximum temperature
- cleaning procedure
Carbon steel, 316L, duplex or a higher-alloy stainless steel may be more economical or technically appropriate for other services.
2. Additive and Dosing Tanks
Petrochemical plants and refineries use small and medium vessels for additives, dosing chemicals, treatment chemicals and blending components.
304L may be a practical fabricated material when the specific chemical remains within its corrosion capability.
Potential raw material includes:
- cold-rolled sheet
- hot-rolled plate
- cut blanks
- formed heads
For flat-product sourcing, JUDE Steel supplies
stainless steel sheet and plate
in Type 304L and other industrial grades.
3. Blending and Day Tanks
Blending tanks and day tanks can contain hydrocarbons, additives or compatible process chemicals.
304L may be selected when stainless construction is required for corrosion control, cleanliness, product contamination control or downstream fabrication requirements.
This does not mean that 304L is required for general hydrocarbon storage.
Carbon steel remains widely used for many compatible hydrocarbon services and can be more economical.
The material decision should therefore be based on actual service requirements rather than the product name alone.
4. Utility Tanks and Low-Chloride Water Systems
304L may also be used in selected refinery or petrochemical utility systems where water chemistry is sufficiently mild.
Potential applications include selected:
- demineralized-water tanks
- low-chloride process-water systems
- clean-water vessels
- compatible condensate systems
- utility tanks
Water chemistry must be reviewed carefully.
Warm chloride-containing water, cooling water, brackish water and seawater can create pitting, crevice corrosion or stress-corrosion-cracking risks that may exceed the practical corrosion margin of 304L.
5. Pipe Spools and Chemical Transfer Lines
Fabricated pipe spools are a major purchasing category in chemical and petrochemical projects.
A 304L spool can include:
- ASTM A312 TP304L pipe
- ASTM A403 WP304L elbows
- ASTM A403 WP304L tees
- ASTM A403 WP304L reducers
- ASTM A182 F304L flanges
- welded branches
- fabricated supports and attachments
The fluid, pressure, temperature and piping code should be identified before the material is approved.
For ASTM A312 scope, see
ASTM A312/A312M.
6. Process Skids and Fabricated Packages
Chemical-injection skids, dosing packages and modular utility systems may contain a combination of:
- small tanks
- pipe spools
- instrument connections
- supports
- covers
- drip trays
- equipment panels
304L can be useful where both welded fabrication and moderate corrosion resistance are required.
Different parts of the same skid may still use different materials.
A 304L tank does not automatically mean every valve, instrument fitting, structural support or process line should also be 304L.
7. Selected Heat-Exchanger Components
304L may be used for selected heat-exchanger shells, channels, plates or other fabricated components where both the process and cooling-side environments are compatible with the alloy.
The corrosion review must consider both sides of the exchanger.
Important factors include:
- process fluid
- cooling-water chloride concentration
- temperature
- flow velocity
- crevice locations
- shutdown conditions
- cleaning procedure
Chloride-rich cooling water, acidic condensate or more demanding refinery service may require 316L, duplex stainless steel or another higher-alloy material.
8. Flanges, Fittings and Valve Components
A complete stainless process system requires more than flat plate and straight pipe.
Depending on the design, 304L-family pressure components may include:
- forged flanges
- wrought elbows
- tees
- reducers
- forged valve parts
- machined pressure components
These products should be ordered under the relevant component specification rather than assuming that ASTM A240 applies to every stainless item in the system.

ASTM A240 vs A312 vs A403 vs A182
Confusing product standards is a common purchasing mistake.
ASTM A240
Use for stainless steel plate, sheet and strip.
Examples include tank shells, vessel plates, covers and fabricated flat components.
ASTM A312
Use for seamless, welded and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel process pipe.
TP304L is a common grade designation within the specification.
ASTM A403
Use for wrought austenitic stainless steel pressure-piping fittings.
WP304L is the relevant 304L-family designation for applicable elbows, tees, reducers and other fittings.
ASTM A182
Use for forged or rolled stainless steel pipe flanges, forged fittings, valves and related pressure parts where the specification applies.
F304L is the applicable 304L-family forged grade.
Procurement rule:
the grade identifies the alloy; the product standard identifies what is actually being purchased.
Why Must Refinery Service Be Identified More Precisely?
“Refinery equipment” is not a corrosion environment.
Within one refinery, stainless steel may encounter:
- clean water
- hydrocarbons
- chloride-contaminated water
- acidic overhead condensate
- sulfur compounds
- hydrogen sulfide
- naphthenic acids
- high-temperature sulfur-containing streams
- chemical additives
The corrosion mechanisms can be completely different.
For this reason, an RFQ should not state:
“304L for refinery service.”
It should state the actual process medium and service conditions.
Where Should 304L Not Be the Default Choice?
304L should be reconsidered when the service involves:
- warm or concentrated chloride solutions
- seawater or brackish water
- aggressive refinery overhead condensates
- significant H2S / sour-service requirements
- strong mineral acids
- hot sulfidation
- naphthenic-acid corrosion
- high-temperature creep-controlled service
- severe crevice-corrosion conditions
Depending on the actual corrosion mechanism, alternatives may include:
- 316L
- 321 or 347
- duplex 2205
- super duplex
- 904L
- nickel alloys
- carbon steel or low-alloy steel where economically appropriate
A higher-alloy stainless steel is not automatically the correct answer either.
Material selection should match the actual damage mechanism and lifecycle economics.
304L vs 316L vs 321/347 vs 2205
| Grade | Main Reason to Select | Typical Screening Position |
|---|---|---|
| 304L | Low carbon + economical Cr-Ni stainless | Compatible mild-to-medium corrosion and welded fabrication |
| 316L | Molybdenum + low carbon | Greater localized-corrosion margin in many chloride environments |
| 321 / 347 | Stabilized austenitic stainless | Applications where thermal exposure and sensitization resistance at elevated temperature matter |
| 2205 | Duplex structure, high strength and chloride resistance | More demanding chloride service where duplex fabrication is appropriate |
The table is a preliminary screening guide only.
For a detailed material decision, identify the specific corrosion mechanism rather than selecting by alloy ranking.
Welding, Heat Tint and Post-Weld Cleaning
Low carbon improves the welding-related sensitization behavior of 304L, but it does not eliminate fabrication requirements.
Welded petrochemical equipment may require control of:
- weld procedure
- heat input
- interpass temperature
- joint cleanliness
- carbon-steel contamination
- heat tint
- weld spatter
- pickling and passivation where specified
- final surface inspection
Heat tint can reduce the local corrosion resistance of stainless steel surfaces if it is not addressed appropriately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can 304L be used for petrochemical storage tanks?
Yes, when the stored chemical, contaminants, temperature and chloride level are compatible with the alloy. The term “petrochemical tank” alone is not sufficient to approve Type 304L.
Can 304L be used for hydrocarbon storage?
It can be used in selected hydrocarbon equipment when stainless steel is required for corrosion, cleanliness or contamination-control reasons. Carbon steel is also widely used for many compatible hydrocarbon services and may be more economical.
Is 304L suitable for refinery overhead systems?
It should not be assumed to be suitable. Refinery overhead systems can contain chlorides, acidic condensates and other aggressive contaminants. Material selection should be based on the actual corrosion environment.
Can 304L be used in sour H2S service?
The commercial grade name alone does not establish sour-service suitability. The actual H2S environment, hardness, welding condition and applicable project or NACE/ISO requirement must be reviewed.
What is the difference between ASTM A240 and ASTM A312 for 304L?
ASTM A240 applies to plate, sheet and strip. ASTM A312 applies to seamless, welded and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel process pipe. Both may use the 304L alloy family, but they describe different products.
What is ASTM A403 WP304L?
WP304L is a 304L-family designation used under ASTM A403 for wrought austenitic stainless steel pressure-piping fittings such as elbows, tees and reducers.
Why is 304L commonly used for welded tanks?
Its lower carbon content reduces the risk of chromium-carbide precipitation associated with welding, providing improved resistance to intergranular corrosion compared with a higher-carbon 304 heat under sensitizing conditions.
Should I use 304L or 316L for chemical transfer piping?
The answer depends on the actual chemical, chloride level, temperature and contaminants. 316L provides additional localized-corrosion resistance in many chloride environments because of its molybdenum content, but it is not automatically required for every chemical-transfer system.
What information should I send JISCO JUDE for a 304L petrochemical quotation?
