A seawater pump can contain a machined shaft, a replaceable sleeve, a cast
casing and forged connections. Describing the entire assembly as a
“2507 pump” does not specify the material required for each part.
For chemical plants, offshore facilities and refinery seawater systems,
Super Duplex 2507 is a candidate where corrosion resistance and mechanical
strength must be considered together. This guide focuses on buying
bar, plate and approved blanks for pump and valve components,
not on selecting a complete pumping package from an alloy name.
The application is established: Valbruna identifies pump shafts, pump and
valve parts, seawater systems and chemical-industry equipment among uses for
1.4410 / S32750 material.
An application reference does not establish suitability for every fluid,
component geometry or operating cycle.
Which Pump and Valve Components Can Use 2507?
Use the approved component drawing to decide both the alloy and the starting
product. The following are sourcing options to review with the equipment
manufacturer, not a requirement to make every part from the same steel.
| Component | Possible starting product | What the drawing should establish |
|---|---|---|
| Pump shaft | S32750 round bar or an approved forged blank | Stock diameter, straightness, machining allowance and final shaft requirements |
| Shaft sleeve or spacer | Approved hollow bar or bored solid bar | Material specification, bore allowance, concentricity and contact surfaces |
| Valve stem or spindle | Bar or a specified forging | Material condition, dimensions, loading and surface requirements |
| Forged valve part or flange | F53 forging where the design specifies ASTM A182/A182M | Forging specification, geometry, inspection and finished-component standard |
| Machined cover, ring or gland | Plate, bar or forging as approved | Permitted manufacturing route and pressure-boundary status |
| Cast casing, valve body or impeller | A separately specified casting alloy | Cast grade, heat treatment, inspection and casting acceptance |
Pump shafts and valve stems
Separate the dimensions of the supplied stock from the tolerances of the
finished shaft. A raw-bar quotation should identify diameter, length,
straightness, surface condition and allowances; the final drawing should
control journals, seal contact areas, threads and other critical features.
Do not use alloy strength alone to approve a shaft design. Ask the equipment
manufacturer to establish the required mechanical performance before material
is substituted. JISCO JUDE’s
round-bar product page
provides a starting point for supply inquiries, subject to grade-specific confirmation.
Sleeves, rings and hollow sections
For a hollow component, an approved hollow-bar route may reduce the amount
of material removed compared with drilling a solid bar. Compare the actual
stock sizes, allowances and inspection requirements before assuming a cost
saving. Alleima publishes a separate
2507 hollow-bar specification;
that is evidence of an available product form, not confirmation of JISCO JUDE stock.
Pressure-containing covers and connections
Do not select plate simply because a finished cover looks flat. The design
may require a forging or another approved route. Define that requirement
before nesting plate blanks or offering an alternative manufacturing method.
S32750, F53 and Cast Grade 5A Are Not One Purchase Description
2507 is the familiar commercial designation. Wrought material
is commonly specified as UNS S32750, with
EN 1.4410 / X2CrNiMoN25-7-4 as the European reference.
Contract acceptance still follows the chosen product standard, not an
international grade-conversion table alone.
| Purchase item | Relevant specification | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless bar | ASTM A276/A276M, S32750 where specified | Bar requirements do not automatically establish forging compliance |
| Bar for applicable pressure-equipment construction | ASTM A479/A479M, S32750 where specified | Use when required by the component and project specification |
| Plate, sheet or strip | ASTM A240/A240M, S32750 | A flat-product specification, not a finished pump or valve standard |
| Applicable forged flange or valve component | ASTM A182/A182M, F53 | Confirm the specified manufacturing and certification requirements |
| Pressure-containing duplex casting | ASTM A995/A995M, exact cast grade as designed | Do not replace the cast specification with a wrought S32750 certificate |
For example, Grade 5A / CE3MN / UNS J93404 is a cast designation
listed in the Steel Founders’ Society of America’s
steel-casting specification summary.
It is not simply another name for a piece of wrought S32750 bar.
The summary is a reference to grade identification; use the contract’s
required standard edition for acceptance.
Similarly, an S32750 bar that matches F53 chemistry is not automatically an
A182-certified forged valve part. Record the material standard and
manufacturing route for each bill-of-materials line.
What 2507 Adds to a Chloride-Service Material Review
2507 is a super duplex stainless steel with ferritic and austenitic phases.
Its chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen alloying supports resistance to
localized corrosion, while the duplex structure provides high strength.
Alleima’s
SAF 2507 bar datasheet
identifies aggressive chloride environments, seawater cooling, refineries
and high-strength mechanical components among relevant applications.
This makes 2507 worth evaluating when 316L or standard duplex 2205 does not
provide the required margin. It does not make 2507 the economical answer
for every pump. Establish the failure concern and project requirement
before increasing alloy content.
For wider chemical and refinery equipment selection, see
JUDE Steel’s 2507 chemical and refinery equipment guide.
The present article concentrates on component stock and procurement.
Nominal Chemistry, PREN and Guaranteed Properties
A nominal description such as 25% chromium, 7% nickel and 4%
molybdenum helps identify the alloy family. It is not a complete
set of contractual composition limits. Valbruna labels these values as
typical analysis in its
1.4410 producer datasheet.
Obtain actual heat chemistry and verify it against the exact ordered standard.
The commonly used screening calculation
PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N
is based on mass percentages. It does not capture component geometry,
finish, weld quality or the complete operating environment. A manufacturer’s
published PREN guarantee applies to its specified product, not automatically
to all material sold as 2507.
The same caution applies to yield strength, tensile strength, elongation,
hardness and phase balance. Specify requirements for the actual product
form, size and delivery condition. Do not copy a plate value into a large-bar
order or require an unexplained exact 50/50 phase split.
Review the Fluid, Crevices and Shutdown Condition
A seawater label leaves too much undefined. Ask the materials engineer to
review water analysis, operating and design temperatures, chlorination,
stagnant periods, deposits and crevices. For a chemical-transfer pump,
provide the actual solution and cleaning chemicals rather than only the
plant’s industry name.
Where hydrogen sulfide is present, provide the applicable sour-service
specification and environmental limits. A statement such as “NACE 2507”
does not identify every condition that must be satisfied. Do not transfer a
steel producer’s qualification to another source or delivery condition.
Cathodically protected components need another review. Alleima’s
2507 technical guidance
discusses hydrogen-induced stress cracking under cathodic protection and
high tensile loading. Resistance to chloride cracking does not establish
immunity to every hydrogen-related mechanism.
Also, do not position super duplex as a default material for hot reactor
internals or fired-heater service. Prolonged elevated-temperature exposure
can impair duplex properties. The designer must confirm the permitted
thermal history and operating envelope.
Machining and Heat Treatment Belong in the Purchase Review
For machined sleeves and shafts, agree the starting condition, allowances
and sequence before committing to stock dimensions. Duplex machining can
require different tools and cutting parameters from conventional austenitic
stainless steel. Cutting recommendations should reflect the actual hardness,
geometry, machine and tooling rather than a universal speed copied from a
catalogue.
JISCO JUDE publishes
machining services for stainless components.
Submit the drawing for a feasibility review; this does not imply that every
finished pump or valve tolerance is available for every material size.
If welding, hardfacing or repair is proposed, make it visible in the
manufacturing plan. Super duplex requires control of its welding thermal
cycle and resulting properties. Do not authorize an unqualified repair or
an improvised stress-relieving cycle on an already accepted blank.
Heat treatment, welding, final machining and inspection responsibilities
should be allocated between the mill, processor and equipment manufacturer.
An incoming certificate cannot establish the condition of a component after
uncontrolled downstream processing.
Specify the Inspection Method, Not Just “Fully Tested”
Material identity and traceability
Match the delivered bars or blanks to the mill certificate, heat number and
order line. Define how identification will be maintained after cutting.
Where positive material identification is required, agree the analytical
method and elements to be verified; do not assume one identification check
proves all composition, microstructure and mechanical requirements.
Microstructure and intermetallic-phase assessment
ASTM A923
provides methods for detecting detrimental intermetallic phases in the
duplex grades within its scope. These include etch examination, impact
and corrosion methods. Meeting basic chemistry and tensile requirements
does not by itself demonstrate that harmful phases are absent.
First check tests already required by the governing product standard.
For additional project testing, identify the applicable method, specimen
condition, sampling location and acceptance limits. Representative sampling
matters, particularly in heavier sections. A ferrite reading is not a
complete substitute for the required assessment.
Pitting tests and finished-component tests
ASTM G48
uses ferric chloride tests to assess localized corrosion. Method A is a
pitting test; Method B is a crevice test. They should not be treated as
identical requests. Define the method, temperature, duration, specimen
preparation and acceptance criteria required by the project.
A laboratory corrosion result is not a guaranteed seawater service life.
Pressure, leakage, dimensional and functional tests for the completed pump
or valve remain separate requirements. Apply the relevant casting assessment
where a cast product is being purchased rather than copying the wrought-material
inspection plan without review.
What Should a 2507 Pump or Valve Material RFQ Include?
Separate the material inquiry from the finished-equipment inquiry. For raw
stock, the supplier needs enough information to identify the product and
inspection route; final pump performance remains with the equipment designer.
- Identity: component, drawing revision, exact grade,
product standard and contract edition. - Starting stock: bar, approved hollow bar, plate or forging;
dimensions, delivery condition and machining allowance. - Service: actual medium, temperature, chlorides,
sour-service requirements and cathodic protection where relevant. - Processing: cutting, machining, welding, repair restrictions
and final surface requirements. - Acceptance: required certificates, traceability, mandatory
and additional tests, sampling and witness points. - Commercial scope: quantity, repeat demand, packaging,
destination and required delivery date.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can S32760 replace S32750 because both are super duplex?
Not without review and approval. They are different alloy designations.
Compare the required chemistry, product standard, material condition and
project qualification before accepting a substitute.
Is a cast pump casing certified as S32750 bar?
No. A casting requires its own cast material specification and records.
For an approved Grade 5A design, CE3MN / J93404 identifies the cast alloy;
a wrought S32750 certificate does not replace the casting documentation.
Can ordinary pipe replace hollow bar for a machined sleeve?
Only when the designer approves the alternative and its requirements are
met. Verify manufacturing route, material standard, dimensions, allowances
and testing. Similar outside dimensions do not establish an equivalent
starting product.
Does a 2507 shaft mean the pump needs 2507 everywhere?
No. Specify each component separately. The casing, shaft, sleeve, seals,
connections and external supports can have different functional and
material requirements. A single alloy label is not a complete bill of materials.
Does JISCO JUDE’s material quotation include finished pump qualification?
Only the explicitly agreed scope is included. Raw-material supply, machining,
component inspection and completed-equipment testing must be distinguished
in the quotation. Do not infer casting supply or pump performance certification
from a general super duplex product listing.

finished equipment must not be assumed available merely because 2507
appears in a general grade portfolio.
Buying raw material for pump shafts, sleeves or valve-component blanks?
Send the component drawing, exact material specification, stock dimensions,
machining allowance, inspection plan, quantity and destination. Identify
special qualification or service restrictions before quotation.
Technical note:
This guide supports preliminary material screening and procurement.
Final alloy selection, corrosion suitability, pressure design,
manufacturing route and equipment qualification must follow the
responsible engineer’s approved specification. A wrought-material
certificate does not certify an entire pump, valve or casting.
